How large are the Western wildfires?

NBC News built a cool little app that allows you to superimpose the areas burnt by each of the major wildfires on top of your own city, so that you can get a true sense of just how large these fires really are. Check it out at https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/map-compare-west-coast-wildfires-2020-n1240011 . You may notice in my sample image (above) that some of the basemap tiles have not finished loading – I’m guessing that they were getting hit pretty hard when I grabbed my image.

Does this give you any ideas for your own app? A few years ago, I helped an EAST student demonstrate how much more damage might have occurred from the EF4 tornado that hit Vilonia if it had instead been a few miles further east, in a much more populated area. It was a useful project that made an impression on local officials and emergency managers.
